Coffee with a story
Kaldi was founded on a simple idea: good coffee should not only be available for purchase, but also for tasting and understanding.
At a time when coffee was primarily sold in a traditional manner, Kaldi brought coffee, tea, retail, and a tasting experience together in one concept. Customers could discover different coffees, compare them, and take them home immediately. That was innovative at the time.
More than 25 years later, Kaldi has grown into a nationwide franchise with over 25 locations across the Netherlands. From these stores, we work daily on coffee and tea with greater attention to origin, taste, and quality.
In recent years, Kaldi has further developed towards specialty coffee and tea. Not as a trend, but from the conviction that good coffee and tea should be a matter of course.
After more than twenty years, founder Hans Tietema handed over the reins to Martijn Bas and Guus Groeneveld. This marked a new chapter for Kaldi, with the same fundamental idea as back then: making quality accessible to a wide audience.

The name Kaldi
The coffee legend tells of the goatherd Kaldi, who herded his flock on the high plains of Ethiopia. Kaldi discovered one early morning that his herd had not returned home. Anxious, he went looking and after hours of walking, he found his goats dancing and jumping. Kaldi saw that his goats were eating red berries. He took them to a nearby monastery, where the abbot experimented with them. He dried them and made them into a drink. Thus was discovered a flavourful drink that was later called coffee with us.
The Kaldi formula
Kaldi brings coffee, tea and experience together in one concept. In our stores, you can not only buy coffee and tea, but also taste and discover them. From blends and origins to espresso machines and brewing methods, we help customers find what suits them.
It's not just about the product, but also about the experience surrounding it. That's why we combine specialized retail with a welcoming tasting room where there is space to taste, compare and enjoy.
