Coffee was first introduced to Colombia in 1723 by the Jesuits, but coffee production did not become significant until the late 19th century. Coffee is produced here by nearly 500,000 (small) farms. In 1960, an advertising agency devised the character Juan Valdez as the emblem of the quality label Café de Colombia. The poor coffee farmer with his donkey was romanticized and stood for the craft and quality.

The Andes contain many areas with microclimates that lend themselves to coffee cultivation, but Colombia's topography makes large-scale cultivation impossible. Therefore, the emphasis is on quality production. Only Arabica varieties are grown.

Colombian coffee has a huge range of flavors, from the heavier, chocolatey coffees to sweeter, fruity batches. There is a wide spectrum of flavors across the regions.
