How is our decaffeinated coffee made?
There are several ways to remove caffeine from coffee beans. Most ways use water, a natural solvent or carbon dioxide. It is not possible to remove all caffeine from coffee. A small amount of about 0.1 percent always remains. The first way to remove caffeine from coffee beans was discovered by Ludwig Roselius and Karl Wimmer in 1903. The beans were steamed in a solution of salt water and then the caffeine was removed with a solvent.
